Twitter is rolling out its “Lite” version, after a successful trial in the Philippines. The Android app will become available in two dozen countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America.

Not too different from Facebook Lite, Twitter has also built a version of its app that’s optimized for developing countries. Twitter Lite minimizes data usage, which makes it more accessible in regions where data plans are too expensive.
The app is able to load faster on a slow connection. Twitter says it is “more resilient on unreliable mobile networks,” like 2G and 3G. Twitter additionally reduced the size of the app to under 3MB, so that it doesn’t take up too much space on a phone.

Twitter says its experiment in the Philippines has led to a greater than 50% increase in tweets.
The move should help Twitter expand its presence internationally. The company has 330 million monthly active users, 80% of whom are outside the U.S.
Twitter investors closely watch the company’s user growth. After a volatile year on the stock market, Twitter’s stock has mostly remained constant for the past year. But at $20.58, it’s still less than a third of the high of $69 it achieved in early 2014.

The New York-based exchange operator plans to introduce bitcoin futures next year, according to a person familiar with the matter, becoming the third major U.S. exchange to dive into the red-hot market for cryptocurrencies. Nasdaq will introduce the products as early as the second quarter, and the contracts will trade on its NFX market, according to the person, who asked not to be named discussing a private matter.

The plan is yet another sign of a large exchange operator pushing bitcoin further into the mainstream investing universe. The offering will pit Nasdaq against two bigger competitors, CME Group Inc. and Cboe Global Markets Inc., both of which already announced plans to offer cryptocurrency derivatives. Nasdaq is a comparatively small player in the futures market, which may make it harder to cultivate an image as a destination for cryptocurrency derivatives trading.

“They’re a small futures exchange, so they possibly see the potential to get into a product that could be much larger some day,” said Rich Repetto, an analyst at Sandler O’Neill & Partners LP.

Allan Schoenberg, a Nasdaq spokesman, declined to comment.

Up Against Bigger Players

The strategy also means that New York Stock Exchange owner Intercontinental Exchange Inc. is the only one of the four major U.S. exchange operators without public plans to offer bitcoin derivatives.

One way Nasdaq seeks to differentiate itself seems to be in the amount of data it uses for pricing the digital currency contracts. VanEck Associates Corp., which recently withdrew plans for a bitcoin exchange-traded fund, will supply the data used to price the contracts, pulling figures from more than 50 sources, according to the person. That appears to exceed CME’s plan to use four sources, and Cboe’s one. Nasdaq’s contracts will be cleared by Options Clearing Corp., the person said.

Handling Hard Forks

The Nasdaq contracts are also designed to handle bitcoin hard forks more elegantly, the person said. Hard forks occur when miners agree to changes in the network that underpins the cryptocurrency, creating a new version. Nasdaq’s product will reinvest proceeds from the spin-off back into the original bitcoin in a way meant to make the process more seamless for traders, the person said.

Bitcoin currently trades on virtually unregulated markets. Nasdaq, CME and Cboe are heavily regulated, bringing an air of legitimacy that should help professional investors feel more comfortable participating. Anyone on the sidelines has missed out on a massive rally: Bitcoin’s price has increased in value by more than 11 times in 2017.

“It’s a great example of the increasing institutional interest in this new asset class,” said Adam White, general manager of GDAX, a cryptocurrency exchange owned by Coinbase. “The emergence of derivatives will help with the process of price discovery.”

People who drink three to four cups of coffee a day are more likely to see health benefits than harm, experiencing lower risks of premature death and heart disease than those who abstain, scientists said on Wednesday.

The research, which collated evidence from more than 200 previous studies, also found coffee consumption was linked to lower risks of diabetes, liver disease, dementia and some cancers.

Three or four cups a day confer the greatest benefit, the scientists said, except for women who are pregnant or who have a higher risk of suffering fractures.

Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed drinks worldwide. To better understand its effects on health, Robin Poole, a public health specialist at Britain's University of Southampton, led a research team in an "umbrella review" of 201 studies based on observational research and 17 studies based on clinical trials across all countries and all settings.

"Umbrella reviews" synthesise previous pooled analyses to give a clearer summary of diverse research on a particular topic.

"Coffee drinking appears safe within usual patterns of consumption," Pool's team concluded in their research, published in the BMJ British medical journal late on Wednesday.

Drinking coffee was consistently linked with a lower risk of death from all causes and from heart disease. The largest reduction in relative risk of premature death is seen in people consuming three cups a day, compared with non-coffee drinkers.

Drinking more than three cups a day was not linked to harm, but the beneficial effects were less pronounced.

Coffee was also associated with a lower risk of several cancers, including prostate, endometrial, skin and liver cancer, as well as type 2 diabetes, gallstones and gout, the researchers said. The greatest benefit was seen for liver conditions such as cirrhosis of the liver.

Poole's team noted that because their review included mainly observational data, no firm conclusions could be drawn about cause and effect. But they said their findings support other recent reviews and studies of coffee intake.

Google has confirmed it has been able to track the location of Android users via the addresses of local mobile phone masts, even when location services were turned off and the sim cards removed to protect privacy.
Revealed by a report by Quartz, Google’s Android system, which handles messaging services to ensure delivery of push notifications, began requesting the unique addresses of mobile phone masts (called Cell ID) at the beginning of 2017.
The information was captured by the phone and routinely sent to Google by any modern Android device, even when location services were turned off and the sim card was removed. As a result Google could in theory track the location of the Android device and therefore the user, despite a reasonable expectation of privacy.
A Google spokesperson said: “In January of this year, we began looking into using Cell ID codes as an additional signal to further improve the speed and performance of message delivery.
“However, we never incorporated Cell ID into our network sync system, so that data was immediately discarded, and we updated it to no longer request Cell ID.”
Google requested the Cell ID alongside what is called the mobile country code and mobile network code, which identify the country and mobile phone operator that the smartphone is using. That data is used to ensure the phone stays properly connected to Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging system, which handles the delivery of messages and notifications to the smartphone.

A persistent connection is required for the system to work, but instead of staying constantly connected, the phone pings Google’s servers at set intervals. The more pings, the greater the battery drain, so the data collected about the country and mobile networks is used to work out the the minimum number of pings required to stay connected without draining the battery – so called heartbeat analysis.
The benefit of having the address of the mobile phone mast to ensure message service reliability is not clear, but through a process of triangulation – the same used to assist when a user is actively using location services – the position of the user can be revealed down to a roughly 400m radius at a minimum, and often much more accurately in urban areas.
Google said that the data was never stored and that Cell ID requests would stop by the end of November, after an update to the messaging system.
Location tracking via smartphones is a common practice used by all the major players, either locally on the device or remotely on a server and is used to provide many of the services expected of a modern phone.
Beyond mapping services, location data is used for delivering the weather, localised news results, shopping services, augmented reality features and even things as mundane as the ability to pair two different wireless devices simply by collocation.
But in most cases it is possible to prevent the location tracking systems from recording data, should services be disabled and privacy features enabled. That was not the case with the Cell ID collection, whether or not the data was stored by Google.

Uber paid hackers, hid data breach affecting 57 million people

The personal information of 57 million Uber riders and drivers was stolen by hackers a year ago — a breach the company reportedly managed to conceal by paying the cyber criminals to destroy the information.

The cyberattack included 50 million Uber riders globally and 7 million drivers in the U.S. The stolen information was mostly limited to names, email addresses and phone numbers, according to a blog post from Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

However, the driver's license numbers of 600,000 drivers in the United States were also compromised and Uber is now in the process of sending notifications to those drivers and regulatory authorities. Forty million riders use Uber every month.

The existence of the breach was kept under wraps for a year and was first reported on Tuesday by Bloomberg.

While Khosrowshahi's blog post does not mention Uber paying off the hackers to destroy the information, the company confirmed to NBC News that it paid two hackers $100,000 as a result of the incident.

Hackers were apparently able to access the user data late last year through a third-party cloud based service used by Uber. When the incident was discovered, Uber's security team was able to cut off the hackers' access and was able to identify them and receive "assurances that the downloaded data had been destroyed," according to Khosrowshahi.

Uber Chief Security Officer Joe Sullivan, who was said to help spearhead the response to the breach, and his deputy are no longer with the company.

Khosrowshahi, who has been at Uber for less than three months, apologized for the incident, which did not happen under his tenure. He said it should have previously been disclosed.

"You may be asking why we are just talking about this now, a year later. I had the same question, so I immediately asked for a thorough investigation of what happened and how we handled it," Khosrowshahi wrote.

He outlined several steps, including notifying drivers, offering fraud protection and hiring Matt Olsen, former general counsel of the National Security Agency to help consult on how Uber's security teams and processes should best function.

Uber orders up to 24,000 Volvo XC90s for driverless fleet

Uber has entered into an agreement with carmaker Volvo to purchase 24,000 of its XC90 SUVs between 2019 and 2021 to form a fleet of autonomous vehicles, according to Bloomberg News. The XC90 is the base of Uber’s latest-generation self-driving test car, which features sensors and autonomous driving computing capability installed by Uber after purchase on the XC90 vehicle.

The deal is said to be worth around $1.4 billion, per the Financial Times, with the XC90 starting at $46,900 in the U.S. in terms of base model consumer pricing. Uber is already testing the XC90 in Arizona, San Francisco and Pittsburgh in trials with safety drivers on board to help refine and improve their software. Uber also paired up with Volvo to jointly develop autonomous driving and a vehicle ready for self-driving implementation, with investment from both sides committed last year.

Uber’s new fleet of XC90s will go further than the existing test vehicles, in that they will incorporate redundant systems for braking and steering that will allow them to operate without a human safety driver on board. The 24,000 vehicle model is also subject to change, depending on Uber’s needs. Uber also paints the right to order vehicles from other OEMs to help contribute to its fleet as part of the deal.

Driverless rival Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous vehicle unit, recently announced plans to launch its own self-driving ride hailing service open to consumers soon, which might be part of the impetus behind Uber accelerating its own plans. Still, no timeline has been given from either company for when everyday users might be able to access the services in a non-testing capacity.

An Uber spokesperson confirmed the 24,000 number offers a general framework, but does not represent the actual confirmed number of cars that will be purchased.

Alibaba invests $2.9B in hypermarket operator Sun Art to continue its offline retail push

Alibaba is continuing its expansion into offline retail after the Chinese e-commerce giant bought up more than one-third of one of Chinese most prolific operators of hypermarket stores.

The firm announced today it has spent HK$22.4 billion (around US$2.88 billion) to acquire of 36.16 percent in Sun Art Retail Group, a Hong Kong-listed business that operates 446 hypermarkets across 224 cities in mainland China.

The deal makes Alibaba the second largest shareholder in the business, which has a market cap of over US$10 billion. Ruentex, the shareholder that sold to Alibaba, will retain a 4.67 share while French retailer Auchan Retail owns a dominant 36.18 percent.

The Information was first to report on the investment before it was announced on Monday.

The deal will draw inevitable comparisons to Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods for $13.7 billion this year, but that would be misplaced. The Whole Foods deal marked a major point for Amazon’s entry into physical retail, however Alibaba’s move into offline began years ago and this is only the largest part of that strategy.

Alibaba bought a 35 percent slice of department store operator InTime in 2014 and then gobbled up 20 percent of retail giant Suning for $4.6 billion in 2015, but it foot the pedal on the gas in 2017. In January, it snapped up the remainder of InTime and took the company private, while in May it invested in supermarket brand Lianhua.

The focus of these deals is to offer a bridge between online and offline commerce, both for users and retailers themselves. Alibaba believes that it can use the colossal amounts of data it picks up through its e-commerce and payment services to improve the consumer experience in-store, while also optimizing fulfillment and stock management. Beyond online services like Tmall for brands and its Taobao marketplace, it can also leverage Alipay — its mobile payment service with over 500 million users — and Cainiao, the logistics offshoot it recently took full control of.
“Physical stores serve an indispensable role during the consumer journey, and should be enhanced through data-driven technology and personalized services in the digital economy,” Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang said in a statement.

“By fully integrating online and physical channels together with our partners,

we look forward to delivering an original and delightful shopping experience to Chinese consumers,” he added.

That’s already playing out. The Chinese internet giant operates its own hybrid store called Hema, where consumers can purchase items using unmanned payment checkouts or order them for delivery. Beyond a taste of the future, the store serves as an incubation lab where Alibaba can develop new ideas for retailers like Sun Art, InTime and Suning.

Alibaba’s new partners aren’t slouches, however. Auchan also operates unmanned payment kiosk services in China. Together, the three investors in Sun Art pledged to introduce “a new shopping experience to China’s 1.3 billion consumers.”

This retail convergence in China isn’t only being driven by Alibaba. Rival invested in Yonghui in 2015.

A quarter mile in 8.9 seconds, in a world where “10-second cars” are coveted. Top speed somewhere north of 250 mph, putting it in the realm of the fastest production cars on the planet, like the Bugatti Chiron and Koenigsegg Agera. And to go with it, four seats (if you’re traveling with two small people), decent cargo room, and 620 miles of range, thanks to a 200-kilowatt hour battery pack, about double what you get in the most capable Model S. Also, it's a convertible.

No surprise the base price will be $200,000, and reserving your spot on the list will cost you $50,000. Considering that Bugatti is a seven-figure car, it's a pretty good deal.1

The Tesla CEO has long said he doesn’t want to make the best electric cars around, but the best cars, period. Introducing this new wonderbeast, he took on a bolder tone. “The point of this is to give the hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars.” He also said it’ll make driving a gas car feel like piloting a steam engine with a side of quiche. When you make cars this outrageous, you get to make up your own metaphors, apparently.

The original Roadster was Tesla’s first car, the proof of concept it built from 2008 to 2012. It was the young automaker’s way of showing that electric cars could be cool, not just overgrown golf carts. People had long asked Musk when he would revive the model to go with his sedans and SUVs, he says. Now he’s making it happen—come 2020.

A customary word of caution: Tesla has a history of over-promising and delivering late, if ever. Musk is struggling just to produce enough (now quaint-seeming) Model 3 sedans, the car that should appeal to the masses and make Tesla more than a niche automaker—and finally make it profitable. A sports car won’t fix its problems—but it might make one hell of a getaway car.

Among those in the dragnet are Richard B. Spencer, founder of the National Policy Institute think thank; there’s also Jason Kessler, who organized the Unite the Right white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August (he was verified a week ago).


Twitter also unverified several others sympathetic to the cause, including Tim “Baked Alaska” Gionet (who’s been banned entirely, actually), journalist Laura Loomer (who you’ll remember from her racist tweet about Uber/Lyft drivers, and subsequently being banned from both services) and Tommy Robinson, who founded the UK-based far-right protest group English Defence League.


Twitter said last week that people seem to view verification as endorsementfrom the company, which isn’t it’s intent – the idea is to let users know that these accounts (usually of public figures) are authentic. Today, it went on to say that it’s reviewing its verification program to make things clearer, and that it will not extend its badges to those who violate its policies.

It’ll be tricky to enforce that policy, given that Twitter hasn’t exactly been great at the similar challenge of tackling reports of harassment on its platform. One can only hope that this move signals a turning point in the company’s journey towards creating a better service.

Google shares developer preview of TensorFlow Lite

Developers were pretty psyched by the announcement at Google I/O back in May that a new version of TensorFlow was being built from the ground up for mobile devices. Today, Google has released a developer preview of TensorFlow Lite.

The software library is aimed at creating a more lightweight machine learning solution for smartphone and embedded devices. The company is calling it an evolution of TensorFlow for mobile and it’s available now for both Android and iOS app developers.

The focus here won’t be on training models but rather on bringing low-latency inference from machine learning models to less robust devices. In layman’s terms this means TensorFlow Lite will focus on applying existing capabilities of models to new data it’s given rather than learning new capabilities from existing data, something most mobile devices simply don’t have the horsepower to handle.

Google detailed that the big priorities when they designed TF Lite from scratch was to emphasize a lightweight product that could initialize quickly and improve model load times on a variety of mobile devices. TensorFlow Lite supports the Android Neural Networks API.

This isn’t a full release, so there’s still much more to come as the library takes shape and things get added. Right now Google says TensorFlow Lite is tuned and ready for a few different vision and natural language processing models like MobileNet, Inception v3 and Smart Reply.

“With this developer preview, we have intentionally started with a constrained platform to ensure performance on some of the most important common models,” a post authored by the TensorFlow team read. “We plan to prioritize future functional expansion based on the needs of our users. The goals for our continued development are to simplify the developer experience, and enable model deployment for a range of mobile and embedded devices.”
