5 Items to Buy for Fall

Although the warm weather makes us reluctant to put our summer clothes away—it isstill July—it is never too early to start scouting for those Fall 2012 must have items. However, not to worry, the Fall 2012 trends promise a fun time to come. We’re given a pick from all white mod outfits to black leather, from military and hunting inspired outfits to miniature floral patterns, and from exaggerated shapes and silhouettes to a standard chunky knit sweater. But we all know that if we copied the exact outfits shown on the runway, we would look a little silly. So I’ve condensed some of these trends into 5 must-have wearable items for Fall 2012.

1. Military inspired trench coat

We’ve seen the classic trench coat everywhere—beige, flared out at the waist and cut just above the knee. But this fall, take a cue from Burberry or Elizabeth and James and buy a classic trench coat in a military green color. Or find a beige trench coat with strong shoulders and over sized pockets on the chest. Another option is to find a simple beige trench coat with exaggerated lapels. The trick to buying “trendy” items is to make sure something, whether the cut or color, is still timeless. Don’t spend your well-earned money on items that will be out of fashion much too quickly.

2. Floral print dress

You wouldn’t necessarily be looking to buy a floral print dress for fall, especially if you live in cooler places. The trick to wearing a sundress in the fall is simple—layer. Wear tights, a scarf and a coat. You can also put on a loose sweater and belt it with some shearling-lined boots. The options are endless in what you can do with floral in the fall. If you don’t want a sundress, find a floral printed dress that’s made of a thicker, sturdier fabric. Or simply a long sleeve or sleeveless cut—not spaghetti straps.

3. Short boots

Last fall we saw an eruption of knee-high boots. But this fall the runways have shown some restraint with the length of their boots. We saw some just-under-the-knee boots, but mostly the shorter boot has reigned. Stores like Urban Outfitters and Top shop, as well as online stores like Asos, have debuted quite a collection of shorter boots. However, these boots make up for their shorter heights by featuring studs, fun prints and material as well as the always classic shear ling.

4. Black and white

Now, this isn’t necessarily an item, per se, but a guideline. There has been an outbreak of all black and white outfits. The trick to pulling this look of is to have a variety in the materials and fabrics used. Don’t do an all-white cotton outfit—instead, wear white jeans with a white cotton t-shirt and a chunky white knit sweater to top it off. And, to spice it up a bit, maybe a black leather belt or black short boots! Also, black leather is hot this season! Just look at the Elizabeth and James textile look book for inspiration for the monochromatic look.

5. Patterned pants

We’re seeing some experimentation in pants as well, both in the pattern and in the cut. It is now safe to veer away a little bit from the skinny jean—try some wide legged pants or a dramatic flare. Better yet, go one step further and buy a jean in a fun pattern! Have fun with your pants this fall—don’t hold back on the color, shape or pattern.
